2nd public General Assembly of RISKBASE in Budapest, held in VITUKI, 15 - 17 May 2008.

Dear AquaTerra and Modelkey friends.

If you have the opportunity, please feel warmly welcome to join the upcoming 2nd public General Assembly of RISKBASE in Budapest, held at VITUKI at 15-17 May 2008. The scope and title of this event is: "Common System Understanding for Risk-Based Management of River Basins". It would be a real pleasure for me to welcome anyone of you at this event.

Please find below the detailed (preliminary) programme/flyer of this event and the registration forms.

RISKBASE is a Coordination Action project funded by the European Commission under its 6th RTD Framework Program. In RISKBASE, leading European scientists and representatives of major, European stakeholder groups review and synthesise the outcome of EC RTD Framework Program projects, and other major initiatives, related to integrated risk assessment-based management of the water/sediment/soil system at the river-basin scale.

More information on RISKBASE can be found at the RISKBASE website:
www.riskbase.info

The specific aim of this 2nd, public General Assembly is to present the key-findings of the 1st half of the project and to guide the direction of the 2nd half of the project. In that 2nd half we specifically want to make the connection to the end-users of the RISKBASE products. They are river basin managers and policy makers, specifically persons involved in the drafting of Water Framework Directive River Basin Management Plans.

From the programme you will notice that the Danube takes a prominent place in our event (several talks at day 1, case study at day 2 and field trip at day 3). Thus it is a great pleasure to me to be able to announce that this General Assembly is substantially co-sponsored by UNESCO-BRESCE (Venice). This co-sponsoring enables the participation of a significant greater number of people from newly accessed or accession states around the Danube.

Kind regards,

Jos Brils
RISKBASE coordinator

5th international Sednet conference, 27 - 29 May 2008, Norway.

On 29 October 2007 was the official deadline for submitting abstracts for the SedNet-2008 conference in Oslo. However, several sediment-researchers announced that they are willing to submit an abstract but that it will arrive a couple of days later. If you belong to these 'late-arrivals', then please let us know
(a) that you still intend to submit an abstract
(b) topic / title of abstract
(c) date on which the abstract can be submitted.
We can then include your abstract-to-be on the list that will be discussed in the SedNet Steering Group end of this week.

Call and template for abstracts can be found on www.sednet.org

  • AquaTerra Training Course
6. Porous Media and AquaTerra Training Course. Modeling techniques and software demonstration. 14.-15. December 2006, Blaubeuren, Germany.

Model simulations in varying geologic media (fractured, porous as well as fractured-porous) are frequently required when confronted with problems such as waste disposal sites, contaminated aquifer remediation, groundwater management and protection, geothermal energy or safety of nuclear waste disposal sites. This is combined with the Aquaterra KNOWMAN course "Modelling techniques and software demonstration" that aims to introduce the modelling concepts in AquaTerra and presents the catchment models currently investigated in the project. For instance, the question of how modelling can be expanded to the river basin scale will be addressed. Software demonstrations of selected models applied in Aqaaterra (S1D, GEOTOP, HydroSphere, MARTHE, Geo-Sys/RockFlow GEOTRANSF) are planned. Aim to this event is to present recent developments in the field of porous media simulation and to give particularly young scientists the possibility to present their work.
